In the DC area, November is just the right month for shopping locally, taking in the arts, and enjoying the amazing cuisines that our city has to offer. Here are activities you and your loved one can participate in before the month of November comes and goes —
Honor a Veteran. Today is Veteran’s Day, and there are numerous Veteran’s Day activities taking place at memorials throughout the DC, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, National World War II Memorial, Navy Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
Order Your Turkey from a Local Farm. If you’ve never enjoyed a Thanksgiving day turkey from a local farm, you may be thinking, “what’s the difference between a turkey from the grocery store and a locally-raised turkey?” Well, for one thing, a locally-raised turkey is fresh. It’s never been processed through some major factory, and it’s never been frozen. And, that will definitely translate into a better main entree on Thanksgiving day. This site lists some local farms that can provide you with a Thanksgiving or Christmas day turkey.
Trot Like a Turkey. This Thanksgiving holiday season is a great time to participate in one of the Turkey Trots in Washington, DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia. Some of the “trots” are for charity and some are just for fun — All of these races are great for burning some turkey-related calories.
Shop Locally. Small Business Saturday — an American shopping holiday that encourages consumers to shop at small business on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. As a small business, we cannot emphasize the importance of participating in this day’s activities enough — This is a chance to rally together as a community and support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods in your community. So, this November 29, we encourage you to shop locally on Small Business Saturday — Here is Business Insider’s list of 20 of the Coolest Small Businesses in DC.
Become an Educated Giver. This is the time of year when you finally determine the charity of choice for your annual giving. Before you write the check, consider checking out Charity Navigator. This site posts charities’ actions and spending, and it rate the charities by accountability, results, and financial responsibility.
Partake in a New Menu. I had an opportunity to check out ZenTen’s new menu last Friday, and I have to tell you that it is fantastic! The Kale Salad was a great way to start the meal — Everything on the Robata Grill is perfection, but I would return every time for the Braised Pork Belly.
Walk Through the Georgetown Gallery Tour. Go beyond DC’s national monuments and explore the upper Georgetown neighborhood. Learn why this neighborhood’s residents, and artists were so influential in our national art education, Smithsonian Galleries, and monuments.
Happy November and Enjoy!
Love & Soul Always, Kay
