When I was young, my Grandma Dealsie made a point of picking up a copy of the Atlantic City Press every Wednesday. Back then, the newspaper printed a new recipe every Wednesday and she wanted to be one of the first to try them.
One Wednesday, the recipe of the week was a Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie. I was super excited about this one because it was a favorite for so many of my Our Lady Star of the Sea classmates at the time. The minute I tasted it, I knew why. It was everything a child loves — ground beef, peas, carrots, mashed potatoes and cheese.
Tonight, I am making a shepherd’s pie in honor of my old Atlantic City neighborhood. The city took quite a beating earlier this week and the governor was forced to literally close it. Fortunately, there are numerous stories of Atlantic City citizens coming together to regroup and rebuild their lives. Thank God!
I am so grateful to hear that my hometown’s residents came together to battle the wrath of this storm. In fact, it’s pretty comforting. Just like Grandma’s shepherd’s pie.
Love & Soul Always, Kay
